Job Summary
The Senior Director, Environmental & Sustainability will report to the VP Public Affairs & Sustainability and is accountable for successful execution of environmental and sustainability strategies for NiSource. The incumbent drives NiSource's robust presence and vigorous network of relationships with Congress, the Administration, trade associations, peer companies and industry stakeholder groups and coalitions. This role also oversees the leadership of the NiSource Political Action Committee (NiPAC).

Essential Functions

  • Creates and sustains industry leading environmental performance in the cross-functional areas of compliance, policy, permitting, remediation and sustainability
  • Develop and assist in the implementation of environmental strategy to improve performance, reduce risk or otherwise provide strategic advantages to the corporation
  • Lead climate change efforts and impact assessment efforts
  • Cultivate trust by developing and nurturing positive relationships with Members of Congress, congressional staff and Administration officials
  • Manage and leverage the federal NiPAC budget, evaluating federal candidates and multi-candidate groups, and recommending specific contribution levels based on NiPAC contribution criteria and input from state operating company leads
  • Responsible for identifying and analyzing key environmental risks and opportunities
  • Oversee management of a large portfolio of legacy remediation
  • Follow and analyze industry and regulatory trends that impact the corporation
  • Identify, develop, enhance and implement proactive and strategic environmental policy programs that support implementation of business strategy
  • Oversee air, water, natural resource and land compliance and policy issues at all NiSource business segments
  • Command of air, water, land, and natural resource related rules and regulations including but not limited to the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act
  • Project management of the environmental aspects of linear and infrastructure capital project programs to integrate existing, changed and new environmental rules and regulation into business unit operations
  • Developing and assisting in the implementation of environmental policy to improve performance, reduce risk or otherwise provide strategic advantages to the corporation
  • Accountable for the productive use of both capital and O&M dollars
  • Proven inspirational, yet pragmatic leader that holds direct reports and their teams accountable for results
  • Experience leading and overseeing multiple disciplines in a highly matrixed organization
  • Sets and communicates priorities based upon outcomes that support NiSource’s defined vision
  • Adheres to annual budget and adjusts accordingly

  • Required Qualifications For Position
  • Bachelor's Degree in environmental, public policy, energy or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in environmental, public policy, energy or related field
  • 5 years professional experience working within utility operations
  • Strong financial and business acumen
  • Knowledge of federal energy policy
  • Strong understanding of environmental agency compliance requirements and applicable state and federal environmental laws/regulations as they pertain to the energy industry
  • Understanding the application of environmental technologies available for improving performance and addressing environmental issues within the business operations
  • Effectively communicating technical subject matter at all organizational levels and functions
  • Facilitates strategic alignment discussions across NiSource Operating Companies to address environmental and political, safety and risk opportunities
  • Experienced in aligning accountabilities, resource capabilities, internal processes, and ongoing measurement systems to ensure that strategic priorities yield measurable and sustainable results
  • Exposure and understanding of external factors influencing the energy sector
  • Develop relationships and networks across NiSource to ensure overall business needs are met
  • Strong focus on talent development and succession planning

Salary Range:

$181,100.00 - $271,800.00
