Energy Resource Trader

  • We are looking to hire someone to work a hybrid schedule (2 days/week in office)
  • 9 hour, early morning shifts (5am)
  • 40 hour/week average work weeks, including weekends and holidays

Job Summary

The Energy Resource Trader (ERT) is responsible for ensuring NIPSCO’s electric system is planned to operate in such a way that is economically maximized while adhering to NERC, RF, MISO and other applicable policies and standards. The ERT leads a daily conference call consisting of representatives from the following areas:  Power Plants, Hydro Plants, Fuel Supply, Environmental, Real Time Asset Optimization and Resource Planning.  The ERT manages the natural gas needs for NIPSCO’s generation fleet.  Additionally, the ERT markets the environmental attributes associated with NIPSCO’s renewable resources.  The ERT function is a 365-day position with weekend and holiday coverage mandatory.

  • Direct daily generation conference calls and implement coordinated unit commitment and dispatch plans with NIPSCO’s generating stations.
  • Forecast the hourly electric load for NIPSCO’s industrial, commercial and residential customer classes.
  • Forecast the hourly production for NIPSCO’s Solar PV and Wind generation facilities.
  • Formulate and submit NIPSCO’s Day Ahead generation offer and load bid portfolio to MISO.
  • Formulate and manage the day-to-day natural gas needs for NIPSCO’s combustion turbines, combined-cycle generation units, and coal fired generation units.
  • Acquire Transmission Service Requests (TSR) and Network Integrated Transmission Service (NITS).
  • Perform Wind/Solar Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) trades.  Coordinate Green-e Energy Verification Audit for NIPSCO Green Power Rider.
  • Acquire or sell environmental attributes such as:  CSAPR Group 3 Allowances, Verified Carbon Offsets (VCO) and Renewable Natural Gas (RNG).
  • Oversee NIPSCO’s strategy related to Auction Revenue Rights (ARR) and Financial Transmission Rights (FTR).
  • Coordinate departmental responses to IURC, OUCC and NERC for reporting requirements and data requests.
  • Obtain qualification for NIPSCO’s Generation Dispatch function.

Required Qualifications for Position

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or equivalent work or military experience.
  • Strong analytical skills including the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability and knowledge to understand and utilize various computer-based software programs.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and be able to work in a team-orientated work environment.
  • Ability to successfully obtain NERC Certification within 1 year.
  • This position requires passing a drug test and federal criminal background and identity check.
  • Willingness to work weekends and holidays.

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

  • Knowledge of power markets, Independent System Operators (ISO), Regional Transmission Organizations (RTO), generating station operations, rates and tariffs.
  • Generation dispatching experience.
  • Current NERC RC Certification.
  • Familiarity with Renewable Energy Certificates, Verified Carbon Offsets and Renewable Natural Gas attributes.

Salary Range:

$107,000.00 - $160,500.00
