Job Summary 

 

To develop and maintain Company Gas Standards relating to materials, operations & maintenance activities, construction practices, and engineering processes for transmission lines, distribution mains, service lines, measurement & regulation stations/settings, underground storage, LNG and associated assetsManage all assignments in accordance with applicable federal, state, and industry standards and codes, ensuring safe, constructible, and cost effective operation of the gas systemInvestigate material failures. Assess and approve new materials for Company use. Communicate effectively with all major stakeholders including Operations, Design Engineering, Major Projects, Compliance, Legal, and manufacturers/suppliers of materials & equipment. 

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Standards Creation and Revisions 

  • Develop and maintain standards for the operation, maintenance, design, construction, and materials used for gas pipelines and facilities  

  • Engage stakeholders, subject matter representatives (SMR), subject matter experts (SME), and Company peers in evaluating the merits and challenges of each new standard or standards revision, in order to achieve a level of consensus that addresses aspects related to technical needs, safety, compliance, cost, and operational needs.  

  • Research, interpret, and apply state, local, and federal codes and policies to NiSource Gas Standards. 

  • Produce deliverable work product in the form of Standards (e.g., GS, HSE, UGS), Operational Notices (ON), Material Standards, Material Alerts, and other guidance materials.  

  • Facilitate SMR meetings on different Gas Standards or Standards Evaluation (SEAS) requests.  

  • Provide ad-hoc technical support and other standards-related guidance/support in the identification and resolution of problems in areas of expertise.  

  • Take responsibility for and execute on assigned Safety Management System (SMS) actions and issues (e.g., CAPs)  

  • Materials Approvals and Failure Investigations 

  • Coordinate Material Standard changes with Supply Chain, Engineering, and other stakeholders.  

  • Support new product evaluations by attending demonstrations, auditing manufacturing facilities, and peer-led activities to review materials.  

  • Meet routinely with manufacturers and distributors to stay current with changes in materials in our industry.  

  • Conduct facility failure investigations and root cause analysis.    

  • Lead approval process for material/equipment approval requests.   

  • Provides assistance to efforts to address material and equipment issues that have wide impact. 

  • Handle and make recommendations on Facility Failure Reviews (FFR) and closings including the completion of technical data and failure coding. 

  • Produce analyses and reports related to facility failures, materials performance, and pilot evaluations.  

  • Prepare annual reports and present to the State DIMP steering teams.   

  • Support Integrity Management (DIMP, TIMP, SIMP) programs  

  • Other duties as assigned 

 

Required Qualifications for Position 

 

  • Completion and approval of Gas Standards advancement criteria to reach level 2 status, or equivalent industry experience 

  • Graduate from a college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in a four-year ABET accredited Engineering program OR four-year ABET accredited Engineering Technology program 

  • 2+ years experience in related field. 

  • Knowledge of the SEAS process.   

  • Knowledge of computer applications, i.e., AutoCAD, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Office  

  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, petroleum, welding, and/or civil engineering  

  • Understanding of basic engineering/technical theories and principles  

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, and making sound recommendations.  

  • Good written and oral communication skills  

  • Valid driver’s license  

  • Comfort and ability to lead meetings with large audiences  

  • Ability to work effectively in diverse teams  

  • Support Company goals and represent the company positively and professionally  

 

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position 

 

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and/or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure 

  • Project management capabilities and Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

  • Gas Standards Engineer 2 - $77,400 - $116,200
  • Gas Standards Engineer 3 - $91,000 - $136,600
  • Sr. Gas Standards Engineer - $107,000 - $160,500

Can be located anywhere within the NiSource service territory

$77,400.00 - $116,200.00
