Job Summary

Team Leader position works very independently and will be responsible for direct supervision of environmental inspection staff, to ensure that company activities comply with state and federal environmental rules and regulations. Leaders are expected to be able to communicate and use their judgment to involve other technical experts, management, attorneys, and governmental personnel as warranted under the particular circumstances. These positions are responsible for developing, interpreting, and implementing policies, plans, and procedures dealing with a wide variety of environmental policy, permitting, remediation, and compliance issues. Issues addressed by these positions vary on a daily basis and are routinely related to federal, state, or local regulations. Additionally, these positions may be involved in preparing, obtaining, and implementing permits or approvals from federal, state or local organizations. Activities may vary considerably from day to day and employees may work independently at locations different from their immediate supervisor.

Duties

  • Assists in the development of and execution of Policies, Plans, and Procedures to be implemented across multiple organizations, at multiple levels, and with multiple business partners to utilize change management tools and skills to facilitate action planning. Develops or oversee development of holistic environmental plans for construction projects and operating areas.
  • Prepares and presents briefings to senior environmental, construction, and operations management.
  • Assesses business conditions, identify opportunities, and develop programs from a multifunctional, cross-process perspective to enhance corporate business positions.
  • Has well developed leadership skill with strong desire to act as a role model and mentor for other technical professionals.
  • Provides business value by commanding an area of environmental subject matter, applying initiatives to leverage that understanding and building strategic competitive advantages for NiSource and its companies.
  • Recognized as an industry expert.
  • Experience addressing complex environmental issues
  • Maintains a working knowledge of electric generation, natural gas distribution, and regulated utility industry standards and business practices
  • Maintains an advanced working knowledge of environmental air, water, natural resource, and waste management rules and requirements.
  • Collaborates with environmental, construction, and operations on innovative ways to approach operations issues in ways that comply with all requirements and improve the environmental sustainability and integrity of NiSource infrastructure. Independently recognizes when to seek assistance from attorneys, experts, or government officials to assess and act on environmental circumstances. Company can rely on professional judgement.
  • Promotes and assures a safe working environment and public safety
  • Utilizes existing systems, processes, and procedures to identify and communicate opportunities for environmental related continuous improvement.
  • Coordinates and/or performs required environmental activities necessary to ensure environmental programs, permits, and requirements are properly executed to attain 100% environmental compliance.
  • Prepares summaries, interpretations, etc. for field construction and operations on the requirements of new or existing air, water, waste, or natural resource requirements.
  • Advises, as directed, construction and operations environmental requirements necessary for projects along with associated timeframes.
  • Works closely with construction, operations, and/or contractor personnel to oversee and maintain environmental programs, systems, and procedures.
  • Prepares technical materials or independently collects data to assist more senior staff in the addressing complex air, water, waste, or natural resource environmental issues.
  • Manages third party consultants to address increasingly complex specific issues or systematic environmental issues.
  • Complies with all Safety Standards and Practices
  • Submits timesheets and expense reports in a timely manner.
  • Negotiates simple issues with state, federal or county regulators.
  • Assists in development and the regular update of environmental training materials, programs, systems, or procedures for individual facilities. Assists in the development of new training materials, programs, systems, or procedures for moderately complex issues.
  • Coordinates with affected business partners to align business operational needs and constraints with efficient and effective environmental risk minimization and mitigation.
  • Completes Workday Learning Modules on time.
  • Independently develops budgets for very large projects or work in a very specialized area. Prepares technical specifications and works directly with Contract Services to retain contractors to work in very specialized areas. Manages the work done by those contractors, approves invoices, negotiates technical and financial details of projects, change orders, etc.

Required Qualifications for Position

  • College degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Meteorology, Biology, Ecology, Geology, Forestry, or other technical related field.
  • Environmental Inspection experience
  • Work independently and use professional judgment.
  • Experience supervising dispersed workforce.
  • Experience working closely with construction, operations, and/or contractor personnel to oversee and maintain environmental programs, systems and procedures.

Salary Range:

$107,000.00 - $160,500.00
