Job Summary

The Aviation Safety Officer is responsible for the overall safety, user compliance, and standardization of the NiSource Aviation department (fixed wing, rotor wing, and UAS initiatives) safety plans. The Safety Officer develops & executes safety policies & procedures which apply to all aspects of Aviation operations and in compliance with IS-BAO (International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations) and Air Charter Safety Foundation. The Safety Officer partners with NiSource Emergency Management, Corporate Security, and Corporate Safety teams to ensure safety system compliance & standardization.

Essential Functions

Oversees the NiSource Safety Management System (SMS) in compliance with FAA Order 8000.369 and works independently with the FAA to enhance safety practices across the enterprise, inclusive of SMS concepts within other company NiSource operating companies.

Plans & implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, federal, and international rules and regulations.

Monitors and analyzes aviation safety data to identify potential hazards and risks within all Aviation teams, and works with those teams to mitigate the risks.

Creates/directs/participates in the implementation the aviation emergency response plan and ensures it is exercised annually.

Develops, implements & maintains Certification and Airworthiness plans and a Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) program.

Conducts safety audits & inspections on aviation facilities, equipment, policies, operational procedures and the NiSource / FAA drug and alcohol program.

Oversees external audits/assessments, reports on findings to leadership, collaborates across the organization to track and resolve findings to affect change in accordance with best industry practices.

Provides safety training to office staff, pilots, maintenance personnel and management in accordance with industry best practices.

Investigates any mishap/incident, occurrence reports, and conduct Aviation Safety Lessons Learned briefings with the FAA, NTSB, and/or international bodies.

Assists with the development and implementation of Operations Manuals.

Preserves company product resources using proactive mishap prevention methods.

Required Qualifications for Position

Bachelor's Degree

High School Diploma and equivalent experience

A minimum of 7-9 years of safety experience.

Familiarity with IS-BAO

Familiarity with state & federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) standards

Capable of solving complex problems with little to no supervision either independently or as part of an integrated team

Excellent time management skills

Excellent relationship building skills/savvy (high emotional intelligence) including the ability to work across organizations and establish credibility.

Demonstrated communication and collaboration skills.

Aptitude for attention to detail, accuracy and precision

Ability to work autonomously and efficiently under time pressures.

Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, in particular Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

Bachelor's Degree Aviation Safety

7-9 years A minimum of eight years of corporate/airline aviation experience.

10+ years 5,000+ hours of flight time.

Salary Range:

$150,900.00 - $226,300.00
