Job Summary
The Chief Pilot UAS Operations oversees the ground and flight operations of an Unmanned Aircraft System. They are responsible for the safe, secure, and compliant operation of all UAS Systems as well as taking ownership of the pilot competency and continued airworthiness of UAS platforms. Serves as team lead and customer interface in operational environments. The Chief Pilot works with multiple stakeholders, including Air Traffic Controllers, FAA, and NiSource Operations to create and comply with existing and new operational procedures that include consideration for existing and future legislation.
Essential Functions
Facilitates all matters related to the safe conduct of operation such as airspace approval, airworthiness certification, and crew qualifications.
Provides strong leadership that conveys a commitment to highest levels of aviation and safety standards for administration, management, employees, and customers.
Oversees UAS Operational Control in a manner that supports adherence to company policy.
Coordinates associated regulatory approvals.
Establishes and verifies crew qualifications, and plans, directs, and coordinates the training and development activities of Autonomous Systems Operators.
Assesses state operating companies for UAS needs.
Develops and maintains comprehensive reports for Operations, Safety, and budgetary needs.
Ensure that Autonomous Systems Operators have the necessary resources to perform the functions of their positions in compliance with applicable regulations.
Ensure aircraft airworthiness.
Stay up to date and incorporate industry standards, best practices, and FAA guidance on Unmanned Aircraft.
Leads diverse team of at least two qualified NiSource employees with authority to hire, terminate, promote, demote, coach, develop and performance manage.
Minimum Qualifications
Must have FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone License
UAV experience
Strong aviation knowledge
Knowledge and maintenance experience of technical systems, including avionics, ground control systems, and radio systems.
Have a good understanding of platforms, sensors, and technology.
Ability to lead a team of NiSource employees and vendors.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree Aviation or Safety
Conventional (crewed) pilot experience
Instrument Rating Certification or Airline Transport Pilot Certification Instrument Rating Certification
Fixed-wind and multi-rotor General Visual Certificate (GVC)

Salary Range:
