Job Summary 

The Process Safety Specialist is responsible act as a subject matter expert and to support the Process Safety Leadership team in the development, execution and administration of process safety initiatives. This role will support specific areas of focus which may include: Risk Assessment, Risk Management, Learning from Experience, Human Factors and Incident Investigation.  
 
The Process Safety Specialist will act as a key point of contact for the Process Safety team and will be a subject matter expert in various process safety processes.  The Process Safety Specialist will assist in continuous improvement processes, as well as develop skills towards facilitation of Risk Assessments on their own and teaching those skills to others in the organization. The Risk Management portion of this role will also focus on integration of risk assessment techniques with other critical processes such as management of change, learning from experience and incident investigation as well as gathering and communicating process safety metrics on a predefined basis.   
 
The incumbent will also be assigned other tasks supporting the overall Process Safety team.  Therefore, the incumbent will be expected to understand and apply skills such as training development and delivery of various process safety subject matter such as risk assessment, incident investigation and process safety auditing commensurate with experience.    

 

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Lead in the sharing of process safety metrics as part of the Learning from Experience process. 

  • Manage some level 6, 5, 4, and 3 safety incidents as part of the Incident Investigation process.   

  • Lead incident investigations on levels 1 & 2 events, including facilitation, third party management, and report outs to NiSource Executive Leaders.    

  • Ensure SMS process consistency across the organization  

  • Participate in safety auditing processes as subject matter experts to coach the organization on process safety. 

  • Provide leadership, counsel, and technical expertise throughout NiSource for process safety processes  

  • Lead in the development and ongoing support of DevonWay process safety modules as requested, including events module, causal evaluation module, etc.  

  • Collect process safety metrics, analyze the data, and produce reports for leadership. 

  • Revise Process Safety processes as appropriate. 

  • Participate with the process safety team leadership in the development and execution of process goals and report on key performance indicators to the Office of Safety Advancement (OSA) leadership  

  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement to improve human reliability through assuring execution of systems and processes.   

  • Develop process safety training materials and lead training.  

  • Develop and facilitate mentorship program materials for process safety processes.  

  • Participate in industry workgroups as a technical process safety professional on behalf of the process safety team. 

  • Lead risk assessments on NiSource owned assets and processes by gathering inputs, data, and coordinating studies with field operations.   

  • Lead the annual review of process documents owned by the Process Safety team as part of NiSource’s overall Safety Management System (SMS).   

  • Lead process safety risk assessments  

  • Acts as a mentor to other process safety professionals.  

 

 

Required Qualifications for Position 

  • Demonstrated ability and 5+ years of independently managing multiple complex tasks or projects, and the ability to drive execution using a formal methodology  

  • Working knowledge of root cause methodologies  

  • Ability to drive and monitor continuous improvement and associated change management   

  • Ability to facilitate meetings and teams to achieve group consensus   

  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal & external stakeholders   

  • Demonstrated written & oral communication skills, including preparation & presentation to all levels of internal and external teams  

  • Ability to become proficient in new systems (e.g., Management of Change Tool, DevonWay, Teams, etc.)  

  • Analytical / critical thinking with proven business acumen   

  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills   

  • Ability to travel to NiSource locations as needed  

  • Ability to work independently with strong work ethic and attention to detail   

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint   

 

 

Preferred Qualifications for Position 

  • Technical Certifications, such as CSP, PMP, CUSP, Process Safety Certificate, Six Sigma Green or Black Belt, etc. 

  • Experience with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, etc.  

  • Experience in Risk Assessment such as HAZOP, BOWTIE, WHAT-IF, LOPA, Fault Tree, Quantitative Risk Assessment, Failure Mode Effect Analysis and Risk Management, Facility Siting 

  • Experience in leading and implementing Incident Investigations using methodologies such as Apollo Root Cause Analysis, TRIPOD, Tap Root, ThinkReliability, National Safety Council 

  • Experience in refining, petrochemical, chemical, or gas or electric utility operations  

  • Experience in work process design and implementation such as API RP 1173, OSHA PSM, Four Disciplines of Execution (4DX), Quality Management Systems, etc.
