Keeping the pipeline healthy
As a Leakage Corrosion Tech, I spend a lot of my time traveling to locations along our transmission pipeline in parts of Virginia and West Virginia, taking readings on pipelines and rectifiers, and testing pipelines. Sometimes my job takes me into the lab, where I test samples for bacteria and water that may have seeped into pipes. Then, our engineers decide whether a repair, recoat or some other action should be taken. I’m on the road several hours most days and occasionally travel overnight.

Getting NACE certified
Within two years of starting this job, everybody has to be certified by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE). I worked with a mentor to train on the job and was well prepared when I took my certification test. I was excited to complete it successfully and gain that first certification. And, although my current job only requires one NACE certificate, NiSource supports my efforts to earn more.

Flexibility... and more
Besides job stability, good pay, solid benefits and the excellent NACE training, one of the best things about my job is the flexibility. I can work four 10-hour days, four and a half nine-hour days or five regular eight-hour days, which helps me balance work and family. One last plus — everybody here is so genuine. And, although I’m on my own a lot of the time, I know I have a whole team of great people I can count on.
