Energizing the communities we serve

Supporting our aspiration to become North America's Premier Regulated Energy Company, we consider it a priority to give back to the community. Through the NiSource Charitable Foundation’s Supporting Those in Need campaign, we're helping to create stronger and more sustainable communities where NiSource employees and customers live, work and play. In 2010, the campaign directed more than $3.5 million to human service organizations providing food, clothing, shelter and other basic needs to individuals and families.

Responding to the continued economic challenges, NiSource companies provided a record level of more than $6.8 million in charitable donations to local, regional and national organizations in 2010.

We are connecting with our communities through:

  • Charitable donations. Through the efforts of NiSource, NIPSCO and its employees, $200,000 was raised for the American Heart Association in 2011, making it northwest Indiana's top Heart Walk contribution to date. Employees at NiSource's Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania and Columbia Gas of Maryland contributed nearly $88,000 during their 2011 United Way employee campaign.
  • Community outreach activities. NiSource's Columbia Gas of Ohio partners with Columbus City Schools to give six high school students an up-close and personal look at their intended profession through the Academy of Engineering (AOE), a paid summer internship program. AOE students learn about engineering, mapping, construction and operations, helping to play an integral role in developing and recruiting the next generation of diverse, professional engineers.
  • Delivering energy-efficiency and education programs. Energy efficiency rebates and products like ENERGY STAR® fixtures, appliance-recycling, weatherization and educational programs help the general public, students and builders become familiar with energy-efficiency tools, techniques and appliances.
  • Investing in jobs and economic development. NiSource invests in its communities through new jobs, local spending and the continued investment in a safe, reliable and more modern energy system, as well as ongoing economic development efforts.
